The Fiesta Bowl confirmed today that eighth ranked Notre Dame (10-2) and seventh ranked Ohio State (11-1) will square off at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on Friday, January 1, 2016. The teams last met a decade ago at the Fiesta Bowl played in Tempe, where the Buckeyes defeated the Fighting Irish by 34-20 on January 2, 2006. This year’s participants are still smarting from disappointing losses in November that extinguished their respective hopes to qualify for the college football playoff, but this matchup will provide plenty of motivation for both teams.
Ohio State is 49-4 in four seasons under Urban Meyer, who has won three national championships in the past nine years. The Irish are 55-22 under Brian Kelly in his six seasons at the helm in South Bend. The Buckeyes are led by quarterback J.T. Barrett, running back Ezekiel Elliott, defensive end Joey Bosa, linebacker Raekwon McMillan and safety Vonn Bell, while Notre Dame features quarterback DeShone Kizer, wide receiver Will Fuller, tackle Ronnie Stanley, defensive lineman Sheldon Day and linebacker Jaylon Smith. The Irish expect to regain the services of nose tackle Jarron Jones for this contest, as well as tailback C.J. Prosise and tight end Durham Smythe. Jones, who suffered a knee injury in fall camp and missed the entire regular season, has been cleared to return to practice without restriction.
The game will be televised on ESPN beginning at 1:00 PM Eastern time.
DagerOne says:
I was kind of hoping for Iowa, since we haven’t played them since the 60’s. :-/
Oh well. Go Irish!
irishhawk50 says:
I am glad that the Irish will face Ohio State. I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the last meeting. This is a game that will show whether this year’s team was really two plays away from 12-0 or 8-4. Go Irish!
Aaron says:
A true measuring stick for the IRISH ND FANS!!!! This is a big one!!! GO IRISH!!!
Ellen says:
Go Irish. So proud of the season and hope Kelly doesn’t ruin the team’s chances for a victory. Get the secondary ready and we should get the victory!!
Irish LOU says:
Irish will be embarrassed like against Alabama couple of years ago.
OSU will run, run, and run again with its great running qb and rbs.
Scott says:
And your evidence is what?
Bill Read says:
Get the secondary back from injuries and they will be much closer to the way you would coach them, Ellen !
Jason says:
Ellen, you must be a new fan. 10-2 with 8 starters and 1000 yd rusher in CJ go down with injury and Kelly ruined our season all the way to a last second field goal against the PAC 12 champ from still getting to the playoff. Remember the 25 years before Kelly??????. 3rd best coach in college football behind Saban and Meyer. Come on Irish fans the man wins games, enough hatred for the man that woke up the echoes! let’s support the man that made ND relevant again. A great big Thanks from the bottom of my heart goes out to coach Kelly and his staff. I’m forever grateful for the hard work they put in so us fans have a quality team to watch week in and weem out. Keep coaching like champions each and every day. GO IRISH! HELL OF A YEAR #FINISHSTRONG #RELAXNDNATION #KELLYCOACHOFTHEYEAR
Mike Coffey says:
Barf
Scott says:
Agreed, 100%!
Scott says:
Jason, you must be a new fan, too. The way ND lost these two games this season is inexcusable, if you ask me. With the level of talent on this team, they should be 12-0 and headed into the playoff as the #1 overall team. True, they only lost two games by a total of 4 points, but it is the way they lost that matters to me…
For instance, the defense collapsed at the end of the Stanford game. When they were waiting for the middle to soften, BAM! 27 yards when they needed it to move into FG range. This is plain unacceptable. Also, the way that they failed to take control of the game when given three red zone opportunities to do so was also unacceptable. They could have taken a 28-21 lead into the half and starting the second half with all of the momentum. Turn any one of their FIVE red zone trips into a TD, ND wins the game.
The Clemson game… Though, I do commend their 4th quarter effort to come within a 2-pt conversion of sending the game to OT, all of the turnovers and failure to move the ball throughout the first THREE quarters is unacceptable. Again, they outmatched Clemson’s talent and failed to seize the moment.
Where we do agree is how much better off the program is now that BK is at the helm. However, he is definitely not COACH OF THE YEAR in my honest opinion. The reason being is the defense. You mean to tell me that with all of its star power on the line and they cannot get a consistent pass rush? Think about that for a minute. The only one who is really performing every snap is Sheldon Day, but he cannot be the only one carrying the load. He needs Okwara and Tillery to start producing, too, but they seem to always be getting manhandled every snap (this is more of an indictment on Longo’s S & C program …not to mention, the umber of injuries, as well).
So, I wouldn’t be anointing BK COACH OF THE YEAR just yet. The quality and quantity is there, but I do not see the total level of coaching there just yet.
Exit77 says:
Agreed, the fact that this program has depth and doesn’t get embarassed anymore by losses to Syracuse and Uconn on senior days is HUUUUUGGGGGEEEEE. Well done Kelly. Beating OSU would be the biggest victory since 93 over FSU. Kelly and staff should be compensated to stay because the system built by them has made ND Football relevant again, and not just this year, but into the foreseeable future. Just remember it wasn’t that long ago that ND was fielding a MAC athletic quality and subpar MAC coaching.
Jack Studer says:
Urban was Lou’s DC and was thought to be a shoo in for the coaching job when Williamson left. He turned the offer down and went with the Gators. He wanted to go for a team that could win and he did so. Notre Dame was not a program he could win with. It would be ironic to beat The Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. I’ve got some old classmates from Columbus who have been dieing for this matchup for a long long time.
Glad to hear some of the walking wounded may be back.
Scott says:
I remember when Urban Meyer was the WR coach while at ND. I do not, however, recall him ever being a DC at any coaching stop.
GOND88 says:
????????? Meyer was WR coach as Scott said and ND never had a coach named Williamson.
I think you meant Tyrone Willingham
Scott says:
🙂 I’m glad someone else caught this, too.
Kevin from Reading, PA says:
It’s put up or shut up time. Welcome to the big time. This would be a national quarterfinal game in an 8 team tournament. I hope the boys can compete. It will be huge if they can pull it off. Win it and become a top 4 team in the final poll. Go Irish!
Dick says:
Proud of the Irish! We made it to big time bowl against a great team and coach. I heard Urban turned down the ND job after making a phone call to Bob Davie and finding that we still had standards in recruiting.
Rob Ninkson says:
Run, run, run like Alabama did? Running QB? ND held McCaffrey, Thomas, Reynolds…
If ND loses it will be vs the pass, which OSU struggles throwing
Scott says:
Yes, I suppose that holding McCaffrey basically in check, Reynolds to basically nothing, and Thomas to bout the same is evidence that OSU will run all over the Irish.
Terry says:
I’ve said off and on for years that ND will not truly be BACK until we win a game against a superior opponent where we are the underdog. I really don’t think we have seen this team at its best, and a team at its best does NOT have 4th quarter defensive collapses.
OSU will do.
PanDomer'73 says:
Great matchup. If BK can avoid nosing around for pro jobs and keep focused (the lads will be) then maybe we can give the Urb his comeuppance. Go Irish!
serreno says:
Exciting! Love the game and can’t wait because it will show whether or not Coach Kelly who will have a month to prepare can get it done in a game like this. This would be huge for the ND program if we can win this. It is hard to believe that we were only seconds and a few points away from being unbeaten. With all the injuries to starters ND have suffered, I think this has been a tremendous year. GO IRISH!
Chuckie says:
The taste of Alabama /Notre Dame in the recent title game has not subsided. History and Culture do NOT trump Multiple Injuries! Sorry to say Buckeyes will rrrolll.
PC says:
Good match up to test ND and see where we stand. I truly believe Ohio St is still one of the 4 best teams especially talent wise so to me this would cap off an excellent but still disappointing season. If we win this game, it will show how we underachieved and could’ve won the whole thing and should get some of the national media off our backs and give us proper respect heading into next season. A loss, will have them chirping that we never win a big bowl and when we match up with the best we fall short. Although, I think the talent and depth has come along way, it would be factually true that we keep falling short in these elite games. Enough of the close losses against the top teams! Lets get over the hump and build this program into a consistent top 5-10 program that can and will beat the best teams. I want to get to a point we are feared as a team no one wants to play and that the experts see as a team that wins the tight games against the best competition. A win, will cement a top 6 finish, with losses to 2 top 5 teams and a win over a top 10 team. You could make a strong case based on that final resume that it was a slightly better season then 2012. Come on fellas, Get it Done!
Terry says:
Sorry, but Ohio State isn’t what they have been in the past 2 years, so beating them doesn’t prove we can beat BAMA. Obviously, injuries factor in, but I don’t think the QB and 2 RB injuries made much of a difference, because Zaire wasn’t looking so good against UVA, so you can reduce the impact by 3 players. We didn’t play anybody great at home, but you could tell by this years games, the team doesn’t travel so well, that is, it doesn’t look so comfortable in away and neutral games, and seemed to be intimidated for the 1st 3 quarters vs Clemson. I think 2 years straight of heavy injuries makes it look like the conditioning has gaps, but without that as an excuse, I think a win vs OSU will prove we can compete against top tier teams, but not necessarily defeat the best of the best. Kelly’s teams are yet to show a toughness, (actually all ND teams over the past 2 decades), and the ability to win huge games against physical, athletic teams.
Scott says:
And, here it comes. The first really big opponent for ND in a bowl game and BAM! the “they are not really a measuring stick” crowd shows its ugly head. Man, when will there ever be a time where you people will ever give YOUR OWN TEAM credit again? Sure, the season was a HUGE disappointment in terms of missing the playoff. But, this team will at least deserve proper credit for knocking off OSU if it happens. Man, I am sick to freakin’ death of all of the naysayers on this site.
Terry G says:
This has the potential to be the biggest win in 20-some years, but would not prove they were a Championship caliber team because MSU beat OSU with a 2-turnover deficit. OSU’s a good team on par with Stanford, but not great. MSU is an example of a good team, with a lot of heart, toughness, and competitive spirit to pull off wins against superior talent; the opposite of ND! Go Spartans, beat BAMA! I used to hate MSU, but I love their coach and style of play.
Scott says:
Sure, ok… I mean, they were the defending National Champions, but whatever floats your boat.
Bill Read says:
Jack: Wlliamson was really Willingham! I think that Fr. Beauchamp and Mike Wadsworth had at least, a
tacit agreement with Meyer and, they flew to Utah only to be told that Meyer was going to Florida where
admission standards really don’t exist. GO IRISH!!!
Terry says:
Let’s see how well BK can prepare his team. He’s completely failed in other big games, and Urban is the best in the business when it comes to preparing his team for big games, because he’s a detail-oriented perfectionist; something BK’s not! OSU is very beatable this year because they cannot throw the ball so well, but ND isn’t very physical against the run with speed LBs who are more edge guys. I think they will give up 17 to 24 points, but must be able to crack the OSU defense. Kizer needs to improve his knowledge and execution of the offense and the receivers need to run better routes and stop dropping the ball. If we have a crisp passing game and avoid huge turnovers, like in the red-zone and ones that are returned for 6, we should be able to pull this one off. Easier said than done though, because OSU thrives in bowl games.
Bill Read says:
Ellen: For those of you who think Brian Kelly should act like a choirboy while coaching a collision sport,
did you happen to see Coach Saban counseling one of his student athletes on the art of catching a punt
last Saturday? Such bad behavior!
Tom D. says:
Hoping for the best, expecting the worst. The Alabama game ruined the 12-0 season for me. If we are to have any chance our defensive coordinator will have to find a way to make our defenders do what he expects. To this point they are clueless more often than not. If we get blown out again in a big game I think it will be time for Coach Kelly to consider a change. We seem to have all the other parts to win big (although we could use a better punter). We currently allow too many big plays and experience too many lapses in the secondary. The secondary supposedly has top notch athletes but they seem unable to defend the pass no matter the skill level of the opposing quarterback.
Scott says:
A better punter? Really? Do you know how many opponents he has pinned deep this season? Your assessment has lost all credibility with that statement alone.
Exit77 says:
Our punter is exceptional. He will be making mucho dinero in the NFL.
Scott says:
Not sure about mucho dinero in the NFL, but I agree that he is pretty darn good. When I said this guy’s assessment lost all credibility, I actually meant it… I stopped reading from that point. Anyone who thinks that ND needs a better punter is a total fool.
Sam Gerardi says:
it was a smart $$$$ decision. OS former player – ass’t coach in charge of a dynamic athletic program. Remember in 1973 when Dr. Krause (Moose/Ed called woody and wanted an 11th game – Woody told Moose that you are out of your mind – I have enough Alum problems without scheduling ND
flirish says:
Very proud of the team but this is a test that Kelly must pass. We haven’t really beaten an elite team in his tenure and we have under performed in virtually all big games he has coached ( except stanford in 2012 and oklahoma on the road). for the most part we have not been prepared and have been out coached in bi games. It is time to see what ND can do against an elite team. we are 0/2 this year –we need this win. A loss says to me that we are miles from being legit. A win says we are on the way to getting to an elite level. It is up to Kelly to do the things he has failed at all season: good game plan; a focused team without his own distractions like looking at the NFL, good game day coaching and play calling and some sort of defensive change in plan
irishhawk50 says:
I wasn’t happy with Kelly’s presser yesterday. He seemed down. I don’t know if it was from all the travel, but seemed to just be saying the words about the Ohio State match up. Hope the team and coaches have the fire to get up for this game. I do! Put me in coach!
Sean says:
We would be in the playoffs if Kelly’s and BVG had done a better job coaching.
Rockne says:
Viewing the Notre Dame football program from a universal perspective, has provided me with a few conclusions that don’t necessarily disturb me as much as it seems indicative of the comfort zone / margin of error psychology adopted by some folks controlling the program and who are seemingly willing to accept that based on the university’s rigorous academics. I think the Adminstration is “corporately comfortable” in that program ethos of receiving a $15 million dollar TV deal as long as it is tolerable and competetive for ratings that won’t force it off the air as a national brand. There is seemingly no intrinsic interest in coming up with a revolutionary idea of getting 1988-1989 style killer players who were fast tough as monsters and extremely Alabama capable today. No doubt we have good kids on the team and they do win but as many have alluded too those questions will keep persisting on how aggravating they are in how they win…those questions were not an issue in a 1988-1989 campaign ND throttled teams throughout the game and no one fan ever had a question as to effort or outcome in their wins EVER.
I do recall prior to the season starting Brian was on a hot seat and he said something that seemed telling…something to the effect this team is going to get 10 wins…..ok well then it seems strange we end up with 10 wins…what did we do to match serve on that prediction?…was it his insightful confidence or was it his recognition that this was what he will always be able to get out of the team provided the standards expected of the players. I think a balanced assessment is in order for the Coach…to his credit he cleaned up a pro first college second mentality problem in the team thinking, he improved the talent depth level on the team through recruiting, he has gotten the team to bowls consistently every year. Now for the minuses, 5 games that should have never been lost due to not running the ball, kicking a field goal, downing the ball, Tulsa (10), South Florida (11), FSU (12), Pitt (13), Northwestern. That quirk is what Swarbrick invested in as the AD so he has to live with that and always to expect a boneheaded loss on the schedule each year. Now being fair injuries and turnovers do hurt a team given the depth they have at the time the team is put together for the season. Again losing 5 key players last year due to academics did hurt us with turnover Golson at the helm.
Overall I think Brian is the correct sympotmatic style coach for the “corporate & academic ethos” in South Bend . Yet I think unless the Irish want to smash the veneer of Sabanesque invincibilities against those types of caliber teams that come their way on the schedule We are going to win games in an aggravating manner lose some games due to a lack of adaptibility and tactical master of play calling, and we are going to have a fan base looking to duck the Alabama style of teams around the country who we know are better because they have not just a deep team but they have a monster ferocious 1988-1989 style of play that simply kicks the Irish’s “nice guys” butts everytime. I am still one for being classy but we are sacrificing and swallowing a corporate friendly cyanide pill for gentle and squshy nice guys who are pretty good team rather than getting that 1988-1989 ferocity that is need to be recruited into a team. What is it about recruiting Bolcar, Stonebreaker, Pritchett style linebackers, Zorich style Nose tackles truly ferocious animals on defense who were quite well mannered after a game of putting their opponent in an ambulance shaking their opponents hands as they are wheeled off the field on a strecher. Trust I don’t wish anyone that typeof harm on purpose but to get back “elite and Championship confidence without fear…you must be the one putting the fear into your opponent and notthe other way around……
NOW do you guys get why we are in need of embracing a little more nasty caliber with our players and perhaps just letting the GPA thing be so difficult for really good players especially on the defensive side of the ball…..besides if the Irish could do that we could actually exceed expectations and land CFP spots every year and thus make the University a significant pay day that the school and football would truly benefit from….remember ND didn’t get the legacy and the success it has from volleyball under Knute Rockne Leahy Parseghian Devine and Holtz it was football..oh wow how controversial is that? NOT VERY AT ALL IT’S COMMON SENSE.
Terry says:
I remember those 88-89-90 teams, especially the D. It was said that they played with such passion because they were afraid of Chris Zorich if they didn’t.
Scott says:
Not only afraid of Zorich, but what Zorich would do to them if they under-performed. Lou knew how to motivate players to the point where they would run through a brick wall for him. It doesn’t seem that Kelly is a motivator like Lou. Even if BK read these posts, I don’t think he would take any of the comments to heart.
Fearless Flea says:
In the Era of Ara, Notre Dame men played football in a ruthlessly brutal and physical manner, within the rules of the game. They were also good students and successful graduates.
Opponents feared Notre Dame because our defense physically dominated them and our offense ground them under. Southern Cal was the anomaly!!
bocceman2 says:
Here is how I see it. OSU runs the read option to perfection thanks to Urban Meyer who really invented it with Trebow at Florida. Kelly after after 11games can’t teach it to Kizer. Van Gorder can’t defend it. You draw the conclusion.
Scott says:
To say that Kizer doesn’t understand the read-option is ludicrous. Did you watch how he used this during the Temple game to score from 79 yards out? How about the 50+ yard scamper during the Stanford game?
Now, I do agree that BVG’s defense has trouble defending it. But, to say that Kizer hasn’t been taught is just plain wrong.
Terry says:
Win this game and ND is back.
Lose it and – not yet. Almost but not quite.
I’d like to see them win by a TD or two, but will settle for a win, preferably with a last minute takeaway or stop by the D – a fumble recovery by Joe Schmidt would be nice – 22 seconds to go OSU on our 31 yard line, Elliott up the middle, Smith starts the strip Schmidt completes it.
ND 22 – OSU 17.
Kelly has to hold back tears after the game and has to leave the podium, players block the cameras and keeps the “how do you feel?” genii from him as they get him to the locker room.
Nice
BTW – ‘Genii’ is the plural of genius.
Scott says:
I agree with your sentiment. However, ND 38 OSU 17 would be a better score for me. Then, they can say they are truly back IMHO.
Though, the last ditch strip-n-fumble with ND recovering would also be very exciting. I think I’d like it either way.
GOND88 says:
OSU has not faced an offense as fast and athletic as ND’s. This doesn’t guarantee a win, but if ND executes it should make for an interesting game and possible win unless they snatch defeat from the jaws of victory which they sometimes do. The defense will get gashed and gouged, so I predict a high scoring game of around 38-35, but it’s anyone’s guess who will have 38 points.
This game will be a referendum on Kelly’s coaching ability since Meyer is an elite coach with an 8-2 bowl record.
